About GearCommons

Why Gear Sharing?

More than anything else in the world, the GearCommons crew wants to spend more time outside adventuring with our friends. However, we've realized that access to gear is a main barrier for a lot of people, keeping them from having unique, meaningful and EPIC experiences outdoors. That's why we created GearCommons, a gear sharing platform where you can find the gear you need at a price you can afford from someone nearby.

For Gear Owners, gear sharing is a great way to try new outdoor activities without dropping thousands of dollars on shiny new gear. You can also share your stoke for the outdoors with others and make money at the same time by lending out the gear you already have. Worried about someone damaging your gear? Gear Owners can opt to include a security deposit with their gear to protect it in case it gets damaged.

For Gear Renters, want to go outside but lack the right gear? No problem, the GearCommons community is your gateway drug to outdoor recreation by hooking you up with access to awesome local gear. Search the GearCommons community and find the gear you need from someone nearby.

Ultimately, GearCommons wants to help you get outside more often, try new activities and have epic adventures.

Anyone from anywhere can sign up, post gear and rent gear. So Sign Up Here to start sharing gear with your neighbors

The GearCommons Team

James Rogers

James large

James hails from Maine, but has been living in (and loving) Boston for most of the last decade. His specialties include software engineering, UI/UX design, and team management at startups and large companies. He attended Tufts University, where he graduated early with honors. When he’s not doing the work that he loves, he can usually be found somewhere outside on adventures such as climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, scuba diving in Bali, deep water soloing in Thailand, bungee jumping in New Zealand, or running marathons. James’ passion for the outdoors is rivaled by his passion for technology, and for finding innovative ways to improve people’s lives through creative uses of it. Also, he is affectionately known as "Baby James" and his favorite beer is Heady Topper from The Alchemist.

Mike Brown

Mike large

Mike was reared in Maine, and stayed true to New England when he got both his bachelors and masters degrees at Tufts University. He has several years of experience in engineering, product management, and innovation. He has multiple patents for a product called the Alpine Hammock, and has started two companies before GearCommons. His favorite adventures involve a healthy dose of Type II Fun: the kind of fun that is miserable at the time, but leads to great stories and fond memories over a beer or two in the future. Examples include running snowshoe marathons in Vermont, drinking whiskey in snow caves, and midnight marathon bike rides through Boston. Mike’s favorite beer is Maine Beer Company’s Lunch IPA.

Joel Weber

Joel large

Joel was raised in New Hampshire, and has several years of experience as a full-stack software developer. He attended the University of Maine, and has independently built complex animation crowdsourcing software, and several web applications. He spends his free time scuba diving through coral reefs, rock climbing around the world, or biking to work in blizzard conditions. Joel is hoping someone will invent a time machine, so that he could go back and pick a favorite craft beer before it was cool.
